Phil Cunliffe from BBC North West Tonight spoke to Streetwise participants Debbie, Mark and John, as well as Opera North Company Manager Chuck Deer, in a report on Streetwise Opera’s Manchester response to The Marriage of Figaro at The Lowry.
The piece focused on how opera is helping people who have experienced homelessness rebuild confidence, friendship and self-worth, while creating ambitious new work alongside professional artists. Debbie spoke movingly about being reunited with her brother through Streetwise Opera after 30 years apart, while Mark described the joy and opportunities the project has brought him, including other acting work. John reflected on how quickly life can unravel into homelessness and how Streetwise Opera has given him a creative outlet and renewed sense of purpose.
The report also highlighted the scale of the production, with Streetwise performers taking to the main stage with a full orchestra and professional singers from Opera North. Chuck Deer stressed how relevant opera can be when it gives people the chance to share stories and experiences that might otherwise never be heard.
